Original Poetry

Cracked Open by Covid (POEM)
Original poetry written by Olivia Schnur, exploring the early days of Covid-19.
Frozen in place
The Winter’s thaw
Spring slows its pace
Awakened from slumber
Ice dissipates to rain
Days no longer numbered
Alone but not lonely
Hours stretch on like miles
She is healing, slowly
Creatures are stirring
Footprints in mud
A childhood recurring
Each night the sky blooms
A sunset canopy
Each morning, she resumes
The prairies ignited
Radiant sun and rain
Spring and Summer collided
She is awakened, once more
As she writes, draws and notices
More than ever before
Leaves brush sun-kissed limbs
Plush prairie grass, a bed
Birdsong poetic as a hymn
Back pressed against a tree
Cradled in roots
Held but her spirit remains free
Summer cracked open
A seed nourished in the earth
Wildflowers bloom in devotion
Shelter in place
Like flowers in the sun
Bloom, at your own pace

Note from the Author
I primarily mental health articles and blogs. However, I felt moved to share my experience of going inward during Covid-19. Quarantine was something I feared immensely. But it turned out to be an unexpected gift.
It forced me to slow down, and to watch life unfolding around me. I become a witness of life: witnessing others while witnessing myself. I witnessed life unfold around me in a way I had never taken the time to before.
In every moment of suffering, we win when we are able to discover the good. We win when we take our suffering and transform it into an opportunity to grow.
Always grow towards the sun.

Wonderful poem Olivia, I loved when you wrote “Back pressed against a tree
Cradled in roots”
The meaning behind this poem is just beautiful.
I love this poem. Days no longer numbered. Spring collides with summer! It is what we are living.
