The Spiritual Significance of the Full Moon with Moon Rituals

Posted on November 29, 2020March 11, 2022 by Olivia Schnur

I have been meaning to write about the spiritual significance of the full moon with moon rituals since I started this blog. For some reason, I have a hard time sitting down to write when the moon is coming into fullness. Perhaps, this is due to the fact that I am a white moon.

Curious to learn about your moon color? Check out my blog post, The Feminine Cycle and the Moon: It’s More than a Phase. This might give you insight into why I have a hard time sitting still during the full moon.

Nevertheless, I am finally making the time to sit down and write. I am super excited to walk you through the spiritual significance of the full moon with moon rituals. It might be my favorite moon phase of all. By the end of this blog post, I hope you’ll understand why.

The Spiritual Significance of the Full Moon For Beginners

First of all, I should mention that if you are new to working with the moon this is not the place to begin. To begin with, I recommend checking out my blog post, The Spiritual Significance of the Moon Phases. Once you have a basic understanding of the moon phases, come back and read this post. You’ll be glad you did.

Secondly, if you are a woman, you may want to visit my blog The Feminine Cycle and the Moon: It’s More than a Phase. This will help you tailor your moon rituals based on your energy and cycle. For example, for some this might be a highly energetic time for spell casting and rituals. For others, this may be a time of retreat and release.

What is the Spiritual Significance of the Full Moon?

This can be confusing. There are many sources that discuss the full moon. To complicate matters further, folklore, myth and fairytales often portray the full moon as a time for darkness and insanity.

Using Your Intuition

I want to empower anyone curious about working with the moon to take a moment and close your eyes. Notice any sensations that arise in your body. Does the body feel heavy? Tired? Energized? Stiff? Relaxed?

Now check in with the mind. Notice if there is any material your thoughts keep returning to. Is this something that needs to be digested? This may be an indication of something that needs to be released.

Lastly, take a moment to sense the energy body. For those familiar with this language, sense your auric field; this is the area roughly within arms distance of your entire body. Utilize your intuition to notice anything clogging up your energy center. Are you unable to sense the area around you? This might be a great indication you are in need of auric cleansing.

Allowing the Moon to Guide You

La Luna is in her power when the moon is full. She illuminates darkness by her powers of reflection. Nevertheless, she knows this is only one phase of her journey. She is never afraid to retreat into the dark.

For many, the full moon is a time to reflect upon our power. How we choose to utilize that power is entirely personal. Perhaps, you feel fully energized on this full moon and would like to utilize your power to cast spells or look into the future.

Alternatively, the moon is viewed as a time for non-attachment. In yogic tradition, the sanskrit word for this is aparigraha. This is one of the guiding ethical principles of yoga.

You may choose to focus on utilizing the full moon as a period of reflection and release. There are many ways to practice release including but not limited to: cord cutting, meditation, auric cleansing and burning sage. For a more detailed post on releasing rituals, read my blog post Rituals to Assist in the Letting Go Process.

How to Honor the Spiritual Significance of the Full Moon with Moon Rituals

Nothing feels more gratifying than finding a ritual to revisit with each full moon. Personally, I mix and match several rituals when the moon is full. However, I almost always take time to charge my crystals, practice yoga and focus on self-care. The following practices may help you to discover a few full moon rituals of your own.

Cleansing and Recharging Crystals Under the Full Moon

Every full moon I place my crystals outside under the light of the moon. It is best to place the crystals on the earth. However, it can be equally as effective to place the crystals inside glass jars and lay the glass jars on the earth. The most important part is that the crystals are under the light of the moon.

The idea behind this practice is that the full moon will cleanse and also recharge the crystals. Much like our aura, crystals absorb energy. If we work with them often, they will pick up on negative energy. Unless you are utilizing self-cleansing crystals like selenite, it is best to cleanse and recharge crystals on a monthly basis.

Leave the crystals out overnight. If you are worried about leaving the crystals outside, you may place them on a windowsill where the full moon shines. You may also choose to leave them out for an hour while the moon is brightest.

The next morning, your crystals will be cleansed. However, to fully maximize the potential of your crystals, you must set an intention. This may be as simple as holding each crystal in your hand and thinking about what you wish to achieve by working with that crystal over the next moon cycle.

You may also choose to set up a crystal grid. Place the crystals around your home in an intentional way to achieve desired results. You may also choose to work with a reiki practitioner who can assist you in creating a reiki crystal grid. Contact me to book an appointment.

Honoring the Moon Goddess

I do not want to step on any toes by suggesting that everyone must believe in the moon goddess in order to practice full moon rituals. However, if you choose to identify with the feminine aspects of the moon, honoring the moon goddess can be an incredibly powerful ritual. Alternatively, you may choose to honor the divine feminine that exists within us all.

Mantra

Practicing mantra means to chant or repeat a phrase several times. Mala beads are useful in this process. A mala is a string of 108 beads that is used for reciting mantra in hinduism. Typically, the mala is held in the right hand. The forefinger and thumb are utilized to move each bead between the fingers until you reach the starting bead or the God/Guru Bead.

Choose a mantra to recite 108 times. If you do not have a mala you may simply repeat a mantra as many times as you intuitively choose. You may select a mantra that aligns with your focus.

Here are some examples of mantras:

  • I am confident
  • My vision is clear
  • I am loved
  • The universe wants me to succeed
  • I am worthy
  • I am good enough

If you would like to explore sanskrit mantras, I recommend doing some research and finding a mantra that resonates with you. I personally like, Mantra for Moon- The Many Powerful Chandra Mantras on Jothisi.

Moon Mandala

You may also choose to honor the moon goddess or divine feminine by creating a moon mandala. A mandala is a symmetrical shape that takes many forms. The mandala is created while focusing on an intention.

To create a moon mandala, gather supplies from the earth. These might include: leaves, twigs, flowers, nuts, seeds, berries or acorns. If it is impractical to create an outdoor moon mandala you may also choose to simply utilize paper and writing utensils.

Here is an example of a paper mandala (and a really old photo of me from 2017).

If you are creating a mandala outdoors, begin by setting an intention. This may be something you wish to release on the full moon. It might also represent something you are attempting to manifest.

Whatever your intention is, choose an item to represent the center point of the mandala. Work from the center continuously adding materials. The mandala should be a symmetrical shape. Allow your intuition to guide you as you play with shapes, colors and size.

Overall, a moon ritual should serve to energize or cleanse in alignment with your intention. This intention will most likely align with the intentions you set during the new moon.

I hope this blog post has shed insight into the spiritual significance of the full moon while providing you with a few full moon rituals. However, I wish to leave you with one final piece of encouragement.

There is no right or wrong way to work with the moon. This blog is simply a guide to assist you on your journey. Follow your heart, your intuition and your breath; they already know the way.
